The short answer: which SMS platform should a cannabis brand use?
Most cannabis brands should use a cannabis-specific marketing platform such as AIQ (Alpine IQ), which now also runs the former Happy Cabbage marketing suite. Mainstream tools like Klaviyo SMS, Postscript and Twilio-based apps block cannabis texting in the US and Canada, so a "normal" ecommerce SMS stack will get your messages filtered or your account shut down.

Three things changed in 2025 and 2026 that most comparison posts have not caught up with:
- Happy Cabbage no longer sells SMS marketing. Alpine IQ acquired its marketing suite, Happy Marketers, in June 2025 and moved those customers onto its platform. Happy Cabbage now focuses on inventory ordering.
- Springbig restructured. In August 2026, Springbig's public parent transferred its operating business to an entity designated by its secured lenders. Check who you are contracting with before you sign or renew.
- Carriers enforce at the brand level. Under A2P 10DLC registration, carriers judge your whole brand, not just individual texts. Changing numbers or disguising words does not get around it.
Best cannabis SMS marketing platforms in 2026: quick comparison
| Platform | Best for | Channels | Pricing | 2026 status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIQ (Alpine IQ) | Dispensaries and multi-location retailers that want one platform for all channels | SMS, email, push, voice drops, direct mail, loyalty, wallet passes | Quote-based (no public pricing) | Active and consolidating: acquired Happy Cabbage's marketing suite, Dispense and Terpli |
| Springbig | Retailers focused on loyalty and rewards | SMS, email, loyalty, gated links | Quote-based | Operating business transferred to lender-designated entity (Aug 2026); confirm ownership and terms |
| Meadow | Dispensaries that want POS, ecommerce and marketing in one system | POS, loyalty, text-to-gated-page "Digital Flyers" | Quote-based | Active; integrated with Springbig loyalty (Nov 2025) |
| Happy Cabbage | Not an SMS option anymore | Inventory ordering (Happy Buyers) | n/a for SMS | Marketing suite sold to Alpine IQ (June 2025) |
None of these platforms publish standard pricing in 2026. Pricing is typically a monthly platform fee plus messaging credits, and it scales with locations and list size. Ask every vendor for a written quote that includes message costs, setup fees and contract length.
Why Klaviyo, Postscript and Twilio don't work for cannabis SMS
Cannabis is federally illegal in the US, so carriers treat it as restricted content no matter what your state allows. Every mainstream SMS platform sends through those carriers, which means the restriction follows you from one platform to the next.
- Twilio says cannabis and CBD messaging is not allowed in the US, with no exceptions. In Canada it bans cannabis-related SMS on short codes, toll-free and long codes, even for two-factor or point-of-sale messages (Twilio). Many smaller SMS apps run on Twilio, so they inherit this ban.
- Klaviyo prohibits SMS content about illegal substances, naming CBD, marijuana/cannabis and THC, on US and Canadian short codes and toll-free numbers (Klaviyo Acceptable Use Policy). Its policy also lets it restrict any use case tied to controlled substances.
- Carriers group cannabis with the SHAFT categories (sex, hate, alcohol, firearms, tobacco) and enforce at the brand level through 10DLC campaign registration. Cannabis words in the message body, dispensary links and "creative spelling" can all trigger filtering (Meadow).
This is why cannabis-specific platforms exist. They build their messaging, routing and compliance tooling around these rules instead of fighting them.
Cannabis SMS platform reviews
1. AIQ (Alpine IQ): best all-in-one cannabis marketing platform
AIQ is the most complete cannabis marketing platform in 2026 and the default choice for most dispensaries. It runs SMS, email, push notifications, voice drops, direct mail and loyalty from one dashboard, and lists cannabis first among the regulated industries it serves.
- Channels: SMS, email, push, Voice Drop, direct mail, and Loops in-store ads
- Loyalty: reward tiers, gamification and Wallet Pass loyalty cards
- Integrations: major cannabis POS systems including Flowhub, Dutchie, Cova, Treez and Blaze
- Consolidation: absorbed Happy Cabbage's marketing suite (2025), plus Dispense ecommerce and the Terpli virtual budtender
Pros: widest channel coverage, deep POS integrations, one vendor instead of three.
Cons: no public pricing, and an all-in-one suite can be more than a single-store dispensary needs.
Best for: multi-location dispensaries and brands that want email, SMS and loyalty in one system.
2. Springbig: loyalty-first platform, now with ownership questions
Springbig built its name on cannabis loyalty programs paired with text and email campaigns. Recent product updates include Face ID authentication for gated links (December 2025) and an AI Audience Builder for segmentation (April 2026).
The caution is corporate, not product. In August 2026 Springbig's public parent eliminated about $12.5 million of secured debt by transferring its former operating subsidiary to an entity designated by its lenders, and the parent is now exploring strategic alternatives (Springbig press release).
Pros: strong loyalty features, gated-link messaging, wide POS coverage.
Cons: ownership uncertainty; ask who your contract is with and what happens to your data if the business changes hands again.
Best for: retailers whose growth strategy centers on loyalty and repeat visits.
3. Meadow: POS with built-in marketing
Meadow is a dispensary operating system covering point of sale, Metrc compliance, delivery and ecommerce. For messaging it uses "Digital Flyers": a short, neutral text that links to a PIN-protected branded page where the product details live, which keeps cannabis content out of the SMS itself (Meadow).
Pros: one system for operations and marketing, a messaging format designed around carrier filtering, and a Springbig loyalty integration.
Cons: makes the most sense if you also switch POS; less suited to brands that only need marketing.
Best for: dispensaries choosing or replacing a POS.
What happened to Happy Cabbage?
Happy Cabbage sold its marketing suite, Happy Marketers, to Alpine IQ in June 2025. Existing customers were migrated to Alpine IQ with their historical data, and Happy Cabbage now focuses on Happy Buyers, its inventory ordering tool (announcement). If you are comparing it for SMS today, you are effectively evaluating AIQ.
How to choose a cannabis marketing platform
Pick based on how you sell, not on feature lists. Every serious platform can send a text; the differences are integrations, compliance tooling and the stability of the company behind it.
- Check your POS integration first. Segmentation and loyalty only work if purchase data flows in automatically. Confirm a native integration with your exact POS.
- Ask how they deliver cannabis content. Have the vendor explain its routing and 10DLC registration, and how it handles carrier filtering. Vague answers are a red flag.
- Look for gated links and age verification. Short neutral texts that link to an age-gated or PIN-protected page keep product details out of the SMS.
- Confirm built-in compliance. Opt-in records, automatic STOP handling and quiet-hours enforcement should be automatic, not manual.
- Check the company, not just the product. The category is consolidating fast. Ask who owns the platform, what happens to your data on an acquisition, and whether you can export your list and consent records at any time.
- Get pricing in writing. Include platform fees, message credits, setup fees, contract length and cancellation terms.
Cannabis SMS compliance rules for 2026
The right platform reduces risk, but your messages still have to follow the rules. This checklist covers what carriers and regulators look for.
- Explicit opt-in: collect written consent before texting; double opt-in is the safest standard.
- Clear opt-out: include "Reply STOP to opt out" and honor it immediately.
- Quiet hours: respect federal and state limits on texting times.
- Neutral copy: keep texts short and non-specific, and put product and price details on a linked, age-gated page.
- No health claims: avoid medical or therapeutic claims and language promoting consumption.
- State rules: only message people in states where your products are legal, and follow each state's advertising rules on pricing and promotions.
- Records: keep an audit log of every opt-in and opt-out, and never buy or share phone lists.
- Honest registration: register your 10DLC brand accurately. Misrepresenting your business or rotating numbers to dodge filtering can get your brand blocked.
Rules vary by state and change often. Have consent language and templates reviewed by cannabis counsel before launch. This guide is marketing guidance, not legal advice.
Don't ignore email
For many cannabis brands, email is the more reliable channel. It isn't subject to carrier filtering, it can carry full product detail, and it supports age-gated sign-ups. Even Twilio, which bans cannabis SMS, points cannabis senders toward email with age gating, legal locales and explicit opt-in. The strongest programs use SMS for short, timely nudges and email for everything with real content: menus, drops, education and loyalty updates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best SMS marketing platform for cannabis?
For most dispensaries, AIQ (Alpine IQ) is the strongest option in 2026: it covers SMS, email, push, voice and loyalty, integrates with the major cannabis POS systems, and has absorbed Happy Cabbage's marketing suite. Springbig is a loyalty-focused alternative, and Meadow suits dispensaries that also want a new POS.
Can cannabis brands use Klaviyo for SMS?
No. Klaviyo prohibits SMS content about cannabis, THC and CBD on US and Canadian short codes and toll-free numbers. Its policy also allows it to restrict use cases tied to controlled substances.
Is SMS marketing legal for dispensaries?
It can be, in states where cannabis is legal and with explicit consent, but carriers still restrict cannabis content because it is federally illegal. That's why dispensaries use cannabis-specific platforms, neutral message copy and age-gated landing pages.
Does Twilio allow cannabis text messages?
No. Twilio prohibits cannabis and CBD messaging in the US with no exceptions, and in Canada it bans cannabis-related SMS on every number type.
Is Happy Cabbage still available for SMS marketing?
No. Alpine IQ acquired Happy Cabbage's marketing suite in June 2025 and migrated its customers. Happy Cabbage now focuses on inventory ordering.
Is Springbig still operating?
Springbig continues to ship product updates, but in August 2026 its public parent transferred its operating business to an entity designated by its secured lenders. Confirm current ownership and contract terms before signing or renewing.
How much does cannabis SMS marketing cost?
The major cannabis platforms don't publish pricing in 2026. Expect a monthly platform fee plus messaging credits that scale with locations and list size, and ask for a written quote including setup fees and contract terms.
